Citrus Community College Education Development Center
Horizons Construction undertook a full-scale renovation and expansion of the Education Development Center at Citrus Community College, incorporating advanced construction methods to maintain structural integrity while modernizing the facility. The scope began with the selective demolition of all interior finishes on both the first and second floors, ensuring that critical structural components were left intact and protected.
The first floor was reconstructed to support a modern testing center and administrative office space, reflecting the needs of a growing academic institution. On the second floor, upgrades included the development of new classrooms and a laboratory space designed for instructional use. Major structural enhancements involved the removal of an outdated south-facing shade structure and the construction of a new south canopy and screen wall, as well as a new elevator equipment room on the building’s west side.
Exterior improvements were comprehensive. The renovation upgraded stairwells, balconies, and canopies while applying a new exterior plaster to the Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) walls on the second floor. Roof work included modifications to accommodate modern mechanical equipment, and targeted site upgrades enhanced both access and functionality across the property.
A significant part of the project included the construction of a second-floor addition housing a new science laboratory, preparation room, storage space, and four small central offices. Supporting infrastructure such as new plumbing, mechanical systems, upgraded electrical service, and a new elevator system were also installed to align with modern building standards and improve the operational efficiency of the facility.
